A senior member of the Canadian insolvency bar, Richard is also a professional engineer. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto (Engineering Physics, 1964 / Law, 1967). He was awarded Dean's Keys in both Engineering and Law, edited the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review and was awarded the Butterworth Prize given to the outstanding graduate entering the practice of law. Following graduate work in international trade and investment law, tax and corporate planning at Harvard Law School (LLM, 1970), he practiced in Toronto as a founding and senior partner of Jones, Rogers until the end of 2006. He has been Counsel, Head of the Insolvency and Restructuring Practice Group and Director of Professional Development of Aylesworth LLP since January 2007.

Richard's practice in business law has been national and international in scope. He is one of Canada's leading insolvency counsel with extensive experience in corporate restructuring. A member of the bar in Ontario since 1969, he has a special call in Alberta and has also appeared as counsel in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and before the Supreme Court of Canada. He has been accepted as an expert witness in Ontario law before the Superior Court of Quebec.

Richard has particular experience in oil and gas, engineering, real estate and commercial lending matters. He is also active in acquisition transactions and issues of corporate governance. He has been engaged as counsel for debtors, creditors and affected stakeholders in many of Canada's major CCAA restructurings from Oakwood Petroleums in 1987 through Olympia & York, Cadillac Fairview, Curragh Resources, Anvil Range, Tiger Lease, Air Canada and Hollinger.

Richard was an instructor in corporate and commercial law and insolvency law in the Ontario Bar Admission course for many years and is a legal reviewer for the National Insolvency Qualification Program. He teaches bankruptcy law at Queen's University Law School. He has presented at seminars and conferences across Canada on insolvency, restructuring, transfer pricing, project management, construction law and other subjects. Several of his papers have been peer-reviewed and published.

Richard is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Ontario Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association and INSOL International. He is also a member of the Canadian Insolvency Foundation, the Canadian Finance & Leasing Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Professional Engineers of Ontario, the University Club of Toronto and the Lawyers Club.
